Totesport have a long history serving unique betting options to British punters. Things have changed considerably for them since privatisation saw Betfred take control and Totesport are now working on building a name for themselves as a bookie capable of competing with the biggest names in the industry.
We’ll look at how they’re doing in our Totesport review which includes details of their new customer offer.
Known for much of its existence as the Tote, Totesport was owned by the British government until it was sold off in 2011.
The idea behind the formation of the Tote was to take money away from illegal bookmakers and make betting on horses safe for punters. It initially began operating at British racecourses and then began taking bets in shops in 1972. Although the Tote has always been a popular bookmaker, the Conservative government looked into privatising it in 1989. Tony Blair’s government tried and failed to sell the Tote before a bid from Betfred was finalised under the premiership of Gordon Brown.
Totesport now offers a selection of gambling products including a sportsbook and online games but is best known for the pool betting service, commonly known as Tote betting. This includes Exacta, Trifecta, Quadpot, Placepot and the ever popular Scoop 6. Totesport retains the exclusive rights to this type of betting although other bookies offer it via syndication.
Totesport Free Bet Welcome Bonus and Promotions
Since Betfred took control of Totesport, the company has begun offering the sort of services you’d expect from the biggest bookies. Thankfully for punters this includes a welcome bonus for all new customers. When you open an account with Totesport via a link on our site and place a first bet of at least £10 on any sportsbook market at evens (2.0) or higher, you’ll receive a £10 free bet and £10 cash back on Totesport’s pools.
The promotions keep coming in many forms for those who continue to do their betting with Totesport. Horse racing punters can get a winnings boost on Lucky 15s, 31s and 63s as well as get money back if their horse loses to the SP favourite. Those who prefer sports betting will enjoy the Double Delight, Hat-Trick Heaven offer which sees double or treble the odds paid on winning first goalscorer bets in football and first tryscorer markets in rugby if the player goes on to score multiple times.
If you spend a minimum of £20 on Totepool bets per week you’ll be entitled to up to 10% cashback and there are a host of promotions for Totesports games and lotto products.
Interface and Appearance
Totesport understandably borrows a fair amount from Betfred but it very much has its own look. Light text and graphics on a black background doesn’t always look great but it certainly does on the Totesport site. Their use of lime green as an accent colour and bold white text is visually very appealing and makes it easier to view the sports, markets and odds available to pick from.
The top of the Totesport site allows you to switch between different sections including sports betting, Totepool and promotions. A little further down and you can pick from the day’s highlights before a list of current in-play markets which you can bet on without needing to visit the event page. The list of sports Totesport offer is down the left-hand side but that’s it on a homepage which is far less cluttered than most others.
Totesport offer a large number of markets on all the main sports and do a very good job of organising them alongside key stats and information to aid in-play betting decisions. The betslip is also very well designed.
Betting Markets and Odds
Totesport have recently improved the market depth they offer on the major sports. They don’t quite compare to the market leaders such as Bet365 or Betfair but the number of betting options has definitely increased. Most punters will be happy with the range of sports that Totesport cover but if those looking for the most niche events may be disappointed.
In the highly likely event that you find the market you’re interested in betting on, chances are you’ll be happy with the odds that Totesport quote. They compare pretty well with the competition in terms of the value offered across the sportsbook but it’s always worth having accounts with multiple bookies to ensure you have a choice of different odds.
There is no live streaming on the Totesport site but they do offer radio commentaries on cricket, football, greyhound and horse racing.
Totesport have come a long way since privatisation including the introduction of a quality mobile betting service. Fancy getting a bet on when you’re out? You have the choice of Totesport’s mobile site or their apps which work on both iOS and Android devices. Whichever option you choose, Totesport’s mobile offering is fast, reliable and a great addition to your betting arsenal.
In addition to the lack of live streaming, Totesport don’t currently offer a cash out option. That limits the control that Totesport customers have over their betting but it will hopefully be added in the not too distant future.
License, Security and Customer Service
Totesport is owned by Petfre. That holding company is registered in Gibraltar so all the subsidiaries including Totesport and Betfred hold licenses in Gibraltar. Totesport is also licensed and regulated by the Gambling Commission of Great Britain which should reassure UK based punters.
In addition to the steps mandated by the regulatory bodies, Totesport have a number of checks in place which have earned them a reputation as one of the most secure bookies around. Your money is safe with Totesport but if you have any further questions about their security arrangements or any other issue you can easily and quickly get through to a customer service adviser either on the phone of their 24/7 live chat feature.
